DExSI: Targeted GC-MS Metabolomics

DExSI (Data Extraction for Stable Isotope-labelled metabolites) is an interactive graphical software package designed to facilitate the rapid quantitation of isotopologues detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The tool caters to the growing use of stable isotope-directed metabolomics across various fields, including microbial, plant, and animal cell studies. By incorporating isotopes like 13C and 15N into metabolites, researchers can measure metabolic fluxes more accurately, but the analysis of these isotopologue patterns requires sophisticated computational tools.

DExSI stands out by offering automated metabolite annotation, which simplifies the identification of metabolites from GC/MS data. It also performs mass and positional isotopomer abundance determination, which is essential for understanding the distribution of isotopes within molecules. Moreover, DExSI includes a feature for natural isotope abundance correction, addressing the challenge of distinguishing between naturally occurring isotopes and those introduced experimentally.

The software is designed with high throughput analyses in mind, providing a range of output options to accommodate large datasets and complex experiments. Its interactive graphical interface makes it accessible to users who may not have extensive experience in computational metabolomics, bridging the gap between complex data analysis and metabolomic research needs.
